WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ACAI BERRY?

Acai berries are drupes that come from the rainforests of Central and South America, although still being classed as berries.

Benefits of acai berries include being high in nutrients and antioxidants, improves cholesterol levels, and boosts brain function. However, due to their short shelf life they are either made into supplements, frozen into a puree, made into pressed juice or turned into powder to be exported.

HOW DOES ACAI BERRY WORK IN THE BODY?

Acai berries are said to contain chromium, zinc, iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus which are beneficial to the body. However, most of the key health benefits come from the plant compounds such as anthocyanins.

Also, they contain antioxidants which prevent the damaging effects of free radicals in the body. If the free radicals are not neutralised it can cause damage to cells which then lead to a whole host of diseases. The neutralising of free radicals means that it can lower the chance of developing diabetes, cancer, and heart complications.

A study concluded that consuming acai berries twice daily for a month can significantly lower bad cholesterol levels. This is also supported by the plant compound anthocyanins found in acai being linked in previous studies to improvements in LDL cholesterol.

The antioxidants found in acai are said to reverse the damaging effects of inflammation and oxidation in brain cells. Inflammation can have a major impact on the brain’s ability to learn and memorise information which studies have claimed that acai is able to help with. It was found that acai was able to encourage the ‘clean up’ of the brain which involves removing cells that no longer function as they should, known as autopathy, and therefore led to new nerves forming and better communication between brain cells.

HOW MUCH ACAI BERRY CAN I TAKE?

The recommended dosage for acai berry is between 500-1500mg per day. Acai supplements are said to usually be safe to ingest, however it is advised that consumption while pregnant or breastfeeding is avoided due to there not being enough evidence to prove its safety to the baby.
